Are you hosting a Halloween party this year, but don't know where to start? Don't worry, we've got you covered!

Set a Date and Send Invitations:

Choose a date for your Halloween party, usually around the weekend closest to October 31 if possible. Earlier in the month of October can be a good idea if you want to make sure more people will be available to attend and keep your weekends clear closer to Halloween. After selecting the date, send out invitations well in advance. You can send them out via traditional mail, email, or digital invites. Some people even create an invite image on a platform like Canva and send it out to people via text or social media.

Choose a Theme:

Decide on a Halloween theme for your party, whether it's a classic haunted house, a specific movie, or a creative concept like "Enchanted Forest". If you go for a specific movie theme, Barbie may be the most economical for the guests, but Hogwarts could be a fun option as well!

Decorations:

Transform your space with Halloween decor. This can include cobwebs, jack-o'-lanterns, skeletons, witches, and eerie lighting. Consider DIY decorations for a personal touch. Some people create the fog affect with a punch, dry ice, or a fog machine. Be careful of those with asthma when using a fog machine though.

Costumes and Contests:

Encourage guests to wear costumes by making it a costume party. Offer prizes for the best, funniest, scariest, and most creative costumes. The prizes can be medals, trophies, candy, gift cards, or gift bags with goodies inside. Add a catwalk for nominees to walk down when voting commences for an extra fun flair. In addition to the costume contest, consider having prizes for various contests and games, such best pumpkin carving and best dance moves.

Food and Drinks:

Create a Halloween-themed menu. Consider spooky snacks, finger foods, and themed cocktails or mocktails. Mocktails can be super tasty and help those who do not drink alcohol feel included! Label dishes with fun names that match your theme like "Plastic Apples" for a Barbie theme or "Broom Stick Pretzels" for a theme like Hogwarts.

Entertainment:

Plan activities and entertainment to keep your guests engaged. Ideas include a costume contest, a haunted house, horror movie screening, pumpkin carving, and halloween games. As suggested in the Costumes section, have guests parade in their costumes on the catwalk, and let the attendees vote for the winners. For the haunted house idea, create a small haunted house or spooky area for guests to explore. Using a specific room, garage, or backyard can help make the party space feel much larger. Either in the spooky area or in a separate are, show classic horror movies or non-horror Halloween movies in a designated area. If the budget allows, provide pumpkins and carving tools for a fun activity. A safer option could be a pumpkin painting contest so that no carving materials are necessary. Set up Halloween-themed games like bobbing for apples or a witch's broomstick race for guests to have fun activities to do if socializing isn't enough. Those witches need a fun icebreaker to let their hair down sometimes.

Music and Playlist:

Create a Halloween-themed playlist featuring spooky songs and movie soundtracks. This will set the atmosphere and keep the energy up. The Adams Family song is a classic.

Photo Booth:

Set up a Halloween-themed photo booth with props and backdrops for guests to take memorable photos. You do not need to buy an actual photo booth to make this happen. Just some fun props and a background should be fine. Everyone has a smartphone these days. To make it easier to find photos from the party, create a unique hashtag and encourage guests to share their experiences on social media. Have someone pre-assigned to capture photos and videos throughout the party so you can relive the fun moments even if only one other person uses the Hashtag!

Party Favors:

Prepare party favors like goody bags filled with Halloween candy, small toys, or other themed items. A fun touch could be having a specific person assigned to taking photos of everyone when they come in and printing them on a portable printer. People love photos of themselves!

Safety Precautions:

If you're serving alcohol, arrange for designated drivers, or provide alternative transportation options like a ride share. Ensure that your party space is well-lit and safe to prevent accidents. In other words, if you're a hoarder, don't let it show at this party! Hide all unnecessary and non-decorative items away in another room to keep the party space as safe as possible.

Plan for Clean-Up:

Ensure you have a plan for cleaning up after the party, especially if it involves messy activities like pumpkin carving. It can be helpful to have people pre-assigned to certain cleanup duties. If possible, have them separate from the set-up crew so no one is too exhausted from doing it all. Maybe your sister helps you set up and your bestie who doesn't drink alcohol helps you with clean-up.

Thank-You Notes:

After the party, send thank-you notes to your guests to express your gratitude for their attendance and participation. Add in memories with that person from the party to add a special touch. Including a picture of the two of you together or your favorite picture of them from the event to the note can make it extra special.

Remember that the key to a super fun Halloween party is to create a memorable and enjoyable atmosphere for your guests. Whether it's through creative decorations, spooky food and drinks, or fun activities like the costume catwalk, your party should leave everyone with a sense of Halloween magic and laughter.
